Cryo101: 50 Questions Answered About Cryotherapy, EMS Sculpting & Cryofacials

TL;DR — Cryotherapy in plain English

Cryotherapy uses controlled sub-zero CO₂ or nitrogen-cooled air to briefly drop skin temperature, triggering a vasoconstriction-then-rebound response that reduces inflammation, soreness, and (in targeted form) fat-cell volume. At Cryo Sanctuary in Renton, WA, a typical session runs 15–20 minutes and is monitored by a certified operator. New clients can book the $199 Slim. Sculpt. Glow. intro (a $700+ value) covering one cryo, one EMS, and one cryofacial session — call (425) 629-8592 or book online.

Medical disclaimer. This page is for general wellness information only and is not medical advice. Cryotherapy, EMS body sculpting, and cryofacials are not a substitute for professional medical care, diagnosis, or treatment. The U.S. FDA has not cleared whole-body cryotherapy for any specific medical condition (per the American Academy of Dermatology). Consult your physician before starting any new wellness protocol — especially if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, Raynaud’s syndrome, a pacemaker, metal implants, or a cold-aggravated condition. Individual results vary.

Cryotherapy basics

Cryotherapy is a wellness treatment that exposes the body — or a specific area — to extreme cold for a short period of time, typically two to twenty minutes. The goal is to trigger a controlled vasoconstriction and inflammatory response that can reduce muscle soreness, joint pain, skin inflammation, and (in targeted-cooling devices like the one we use at Cryo Sanctuary) localized fat-cell volume. Cryotherapy comes in two main forms: whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) in a chamber, and localized or targeted cryotherapy applied to a specific area with a CO₂ wand. We specialize in localized CO₂ cryotherapy at our Renton, WA studio.

Cryotherapy works by rapidly cooling the skin and underlying tissue, which causes blood vessels to constrict (vasoconstriction). Once the cold exposure ends, the vessels rapidly dilate again, flushing fresh oxygenated blood through the area. This rebound is what drives the anti-inflammatory and recovery effects. Targeted CO₂ cryotherapy — the technology used at Cryo Sanctuary — also triggers apoptosis in fat cells when applied at therapeutic temperatures, leading to gradual fat-cell elimination through the lymphatic system over the following weeks.

Whole-body cryotherapy chambers typically operate between -110°C and -140°C (-166°F to -220°F) for two to four minutes (Cleveland Clinic). At Cryo Sanctuary we use targeted CO₂ cryotherapy, which delivers cooled CO₂ to the skin surface at approximately -78°C (-108°F) for 15–20 minutes per area. Targeted treatments use less extreme temperatures over a longer duration to safely reach deeper tissue.

A whole-body cryo session typically lasts 2 to 4 minutes (first-timers often start at 2.5 minutes). A targeted or localized cryotherapy session at Cryo Sanctuary lasts 15 to 20 minutes per area because CO₂ wands work at a less extreme temperature for longer to reach subcutaneous fat or pain points. Plan for a 30–45 minute appointment including consult, prep, and post-session aftercare.

No, cryotherapy does not hurt. Most clients describe the sensation as a cooling tingle or “intense breeze” rather than pain. At Cryo Sanctuary we monitor every targeted-cryo session and you can stop at any time. Expect about 30 seconds of adjustment as your skin acclimates, then a comfortable cool sensation for the rest of the 15–20 minute session.

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) places you in a head-out chamber for 2–4 minutes at -110°C to -140°C — used mainly for systemic recovery, mood, and inflammation. Targeted or localized cryotherapy uses a handheld CO₂ wand on a specific area (abdomen, thighs, neck, arms) for 15–20 minutes at around -78°C — used for cryoslimming, pain relief, skin tightening, and cryofacials. Cryo Sanctuary specializes in targeted CO₂ cryotherapy.

An ice bath holds the body at roughly 10–15°C (50–59°F) for 5–15 minutes, primarily affecting muscle temperature. Cryotherapy hits -78°C to -140°C for a much shorter time, dropping skin temperature dramatically while core temperature is barely affected. Cryotherapy delivers a stronger anti-inflammatory rebound with less time commitment, and you stay completely dry — no clothes-changing or skin pruning required.

Reported and studied benefits include reduced muscle soreness and faster post-exercise recovery (Mass General Brigham), short-term anti-inflammatory effects (PubMed scoping reviews), improved mood and energy via endorphin release, temporary skin tightening, reduction of fine lines, and — with targeted CO₂ devices — measurable fat-volume reduction in treated areas. Outcomes vary by person, treatment type, and number of sessions.

The evidence is strongest for muscle recovery, post-exercise inflammation, and certain skin conditions (peer-reviewed via PubMed and clinical reviews by Mass General Brigham and Johns Hopkins). Targeted cryolipolysis (the mechanism behind cryoslimming and CoolSculpting) is FDA-cleared for fat-layer reduction. Evidence is mixed for systemic weight loss, mood, and chronic conditions — the FDA has not cleared whole-body cryotherapy for any specific medical condition (AAD).

Whole-body cryotherapy is not FDA-cleared for any specific medical condition (American Academy of Dermatology). However, cryolipolysis devices — the targeted-cooling technology behind cryoslimming and CoolSculpting — are FDA-cleared for non-invasive fat reduction in specific body areas (abdomen, flanks, thighs, etc.). Cryotherapy is best framed as a wellness service, not a medical treatment.

Cryoslimming & body contouring

Cryoslimming (also called targeted cryolipolysis) uses controlled sub-zero CO₂ to cool fat cells beneath the skin to a temperature that triggers apoptosis — a programmed cell-death cascade. The damaged fat cells are then cleared through the lymphatic system over the following 4–12 weeks. Cryoslimming is non-invasive, requires no surgery or downtime, and is best suited for stubborn pinchable fat in the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and back. Learn more on our cryoslimming service page.

Yes — when the right candidate is treated with the right protocol. Published manufacturer data and independent clinical reviews show 20–25% fat-layer reduction per treated area after a full session series (typically 4–6 sessions per area). At Cryo Sanctuary we measure circumference and take before/after photos at each visit so you can track real progress. Cryoslimming is not a weight-loss tool — it reduces volume in a specific area, not pounds on a scale. See our before & after gallery.

CoolSculpting and cryoslimming both use cold to trigger fat-cell apoptosis, but the delivery is different. CoolSculpting uses suction applicators that clamp onto a pinched fat pocket for 35–60 minutes per area. Targeted CO₂ cryoslimming uses a handheld wand that’s massaged across the treatment area for 15–20 minutes — no suction, no bruising-from-cup pattern, and easier to treat curved or hard-to-clamp areas like inner thighs, knees, and chin.

They target different things. Cryoslimming reduces fat volume by killing fat cells with cold. EMS body sculpting builds and tones muscle by triggering ~20,000 supramaximal contractions in 30 minutes — far more than you can produce voluntarily. The two pair extremely well: cryo reduces the fat layer, EMS sculpts the muscle underneath. Our Cryo Combo with EMS package ($450 for 2 cryo + 1 EMS) is built around this stack.

Most clients start to see visible contouring at 2–4 weeks, with full results around 12 weeks after a series of 4–6 sessions per area, spaced 2 weeks apart. Some clients book up to 10 sessions for stubborn areas or larger zones. We’ll map out a personalized session plan during your free consult based on the area you’re treating and your goals.

You may notice early softening and slight contouring within 2–3 weeks as the lymphatic system begins clearing damaged fat cells. Full results typically arrive at 6–12 weeks post-treatment. Most clients see the most dramatic change between weeks 4 and 8. Photos and measurements taken at each session make the progression easy to track.

Peer-reviewed cryolipolysis studies report an average 20–25% reduction in the fat layer of the treated area per session series, measured by ultrasound or caliper. Independent review of multi-session protocols (5+ sessions) has reported up to 38% fat-layer reduction in treated areas. Numbers depend on baseline fat thickness, how compliant you are with hydration and post-care, and the specific protocol used.

Side effects are typically mild and temporary: redness, mild swelling, tingling, temporary numbness, and occasional bruising in the treated area. These usually resolve within hours to a few days. Bruising, when it occurs, can last 3–10 days. Rare side effects include cold panniculitis (a temporary skin reaction). We screen every client for contraindications before starting.

Cryoslimming does not hurt. The first 30 seconds feel like an intense cold breeze, then your skin adjusts and the rest of the 15–20 minute session feels like a sustained cool tingle. Many clients find it surprisingly relaxing. You can stop at any time and your operator monitors temperature throughout.

Yes — cryoslimming is safe for healthy adults with no contraindications. The targeted-cooling technology is FDA-cleared, sessions are operator-monitored, and the treatment is non-invasive (no needles, anesthesia, or cuts). It is not safe for people who are pregnant, have Raynaud’s syndrome, cold-agglutinin disease, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, severe peripheral vascular disease, or recent skin damage in the treatment area. See the Safety section below for the full list.

EMS body sculpting

EMS body sculpting uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) to trigger supramaximal muscle contractions — about 20,000 in a 30-minute session, far more than you can produce voluntarily. These contractions cause muscle fibers to adapt and grow (similar to high-intensity strength training), and in some protocols also trigger fat-cell apoptosis from the metabolic load. Results: tighter, more defined muscle in the abs, glutes, arms, or thighs. Learn more on our EMS body sculpting page.

EMS body sculpting and Emsculpt both use HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology, but Emsculpt is a brand name owned by BTL. Cryo Sanctuary uses Emsculpt-comparable EMS technology — same operating principle, same supramaximal contraction count, at a more accessible price point. Functionally, the muscle-building outcome is similar.

Emsculpt uses HIFEM only — focused on muscle building. Emsculpt Neo combines HIFEM with synchronized radiofrequency (RF) heating in the same applicator, simultaneously building muscle and triggering fat-layer reduction. Neo costs more per session ($750–$1,000+ at most providers). At Cryo Sanctuary we get the dual-action effect by stacking EMS with cryoslimming in our Cryo Combo package — same outcome, different delivery.

Yes — peer-reviewed clinical studies and a published systematic review on PubMed report measurable increases in muscle thickness (~16%) and reductions in subcutaneous fat (~19%) in the treated area after a 4-session course. Results require a complete series and are temporary without maintenance — typically every 6 months — since the muscle adaptation reverses without continued stimulus.

The standard clinical protocol is 4 sessions over 2 weeks (two sessions per week, 2–3 days apart). Some clients add 2 maintenance sessions every 6 months to retain muscle adaptation. We’ll recommend a session count during your consult based on your goals and target area.

Results typically last 6 months without maintenance, after which muscle adaptation begins to fade if not reinforced through training or repeat sessions. Clients who pair EMS with regular strength training maintain results longer. A maintenance protocol of 1–2 sessions every six months keeps the muscle definition.

EMS body sculpting is contraindicated for people with cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, drug-delivery pumps, or any electrically-active implants, anyone with metal IUDs, surgical clips, or metal implants in the treatment area, those with epilepsy, recent surgery, hernias, malignancy, or pregnancy. Always screen with your operator before booking.

Standard market pricing for Emsculpt or Emsculpt Neo runs $750–$1,000+ per session with full packages $3,000–$5,000. At Cryo Sanctuary, a single EMS session is $299, and new clients access a $149 introductory rate (code EMS149) for a 45-minute session. Multi-session packages and the Cryo Combo bundle reduce per-session cost further — see our Packages page.

Cryofacials & skin treatments

A cryofacial is a non-invasive facial treatment that uses cooled CO₂ or nitrogen vapor to lower skin temperature on the face, neck, and décolleté for 8–12 minutes. The cold triggers vasoconstriction-then-rebound, increased microcirculation, collagen stimulation, and pore tightening. Many clients use cryofacials before events for an immediate brightness and tightness effect. Learn more on our cryofacial service page.

Reported benefits: reduced puffiness and under-eye darkness, immediate skin brightness and tightness lasting 24–48 hours, gradual reduction of fine lines with consistent treatment, calmer redness and irritation, and increased product absorption right after the treatment. Cryofacials also help manage acne and rosacea-prone skin by tightening oil-producing follicles and reducing inflammation.

A HydraFacial uses a vortex-suction wand to exfoliate, extract, and infuse hydrating serums — it’s primarily a cleansing/extraction treatment. A cryofacial uses cooled CO₂ to trigger vasoconstriction and collagen response — it’s primarily an inflammation/circulation treatment. The two are complementary: HydraFacial cleans, cryofacial calms and tightens. Some clients alternate them every 2–3 weeks.

For visible cumulative results, plan 1–3 sessions per week for the first 4–6 weeks, then drop to maintenance every 3–5 weeks. For event prep, a single cryofacial 24–48 hours before delivers a noticeable glow and tightness on the day. Your skin type, goals, and budget shape the cadence — we recommend a plan during your consult.

Immediate effects (brightness, tightness, reduced puffiness) last 24–48 hours. Cumulative effects (collagen response, fine-line softening) build with consistent sessions and last up to 4 weeks between maintenance treatments. Results compound over a series — most clients see meaningful skin-quality change after 4–6 sessions.

Cryofacials can help reduce acne flares (by tightening oil-producing follicles and lowering inflammation), calm rosacea (vasoconstriction reduces visible redness, though this is typically temporary), and rapidly reduce puffiness (especially under-eye fluid retention). They are not a cure for any chronic skin condition — clients with active rosacea or cold-sensitivity should consult their dermatologist before booking.

Safety, risks & contraindications

For healthy adults with no contraindications, cryotherapy is considered safe when performed by a trained operator with monitored sessions and proper protective gear (dry skin, gloves, socks for whole-body, eye protection for facial). The most common side effects are mild and temporary: skin redness, tingling, temporary numbness. Serious risks (frostbite, cold panniculitis, hypoxia) are rare and almost always associated with unattended chambers, exceeding session length, or wet skin contact.

Cryotherapy is contraindicated for: pregnancy, uncontrolled hypertension or severe cardiovascular disease, recent stroke or heart attack, Raynaud’s syndrome, cold agglutinin disease, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, severe peripheral vascular disease, deep vein thrombosis, open wounds in the treatment area, severe anemia, and uncontrolled seizure disorders. Always disclose your full medical history before booking.

No. Cryotherapy is contraindicated during pregnancy. The vascular and hormonal effects of cold exposure on a pregnancy are not well studied and the standard medical recommendation is to wait until after delivery and the postpartum recovery period. Consult your OB before resuming.

If you have uncontrolled hypertension, recent heart attack, recent stroke, severe arrhythmia, or congestive heart failure, cryotherapy is not recommended. Cold exposure raises blood pressure transiently and can stress an already compromised cardiovascular system. Well-controlled, mild hypertension is sometimes acceptable with physician clearance — bring written approval to your consult.

No — Raynaud’s syndrome, cold urticaria (cold allergy), cold agglutinin disease, and cryoglobulinemia are absolute contraindications. The cold trigger that drives the therapeutic response in healthy clients can cause severe vascular spasm or systemic reactions in patients with these conditions.

Most cryotherapy providers require clients to be 18+, with 14–17 admitted with a parent or guardian’s written consent and direct in-room supervision. Pediatric cryotherapy (under 14) is not standard and we do not offer it. ID may be requested at first visit.

Cryotherapy is generally safe with metal implants and pacemakers when properly monitored. EMS body sculpting is different — pacemakers, defibrillators, electrically-active implants, and metal IUDs or implants in the treatment area are absolute contraindications for EMS. Always disclose every implant and device during intake. When in doubt, your operator will recommend skipping the EMS portion.

Whole-body cryo chambers are head-out designs — your head and shoulders stay above the chamber rim, and you can step out at any time. Targeted CO₂ cryotherapy at Cryo Sanctuary is performed lying or seated in an open treatment room — no chamber, no enclosed space. Claustrophobia is essentially a non-issue with our targeted treatments.
